Taipei MRT Signage System Design Elements and Content
1. Identification of Systems, Lines, Stations, and Facilities (1) System Identification-- enables passengers to easily recognize and differentiate the Taipei MRT system from other transportation facilities. The Taipei MRT logo is utilized in Taipei MRT identification signage and primarily functions as a means of identifying the Taipei Metro system. This logo is mainly placed near entrances/exits and positioned in clearly visible locations along major streets to align with the spatial characteristics of the entrance areas. The line color is utilized as the primary color for building decorations. (3) Station Identification-- enables passengers to easily recognize and differentiate the individual stations in the MRT system. In addition to the unique architectural style of each station, station names and station codes facilitate identification of stations. This signage is present at all station entrances, the transition areas with non-MRT facilities, and on the platform level to assist passengers in identifying their respective stations when entering buildings and when trains arrive. The overall network has been established since the opening of the Songshan Line, and the introduction of station codes has enabled international travelers who may not be familiar with Chinese or English to rapidly identify stations. Station names on the platform level facilitate identification of stations when trains arrive. Station numbering was introduced throughout the network beginning with the opening of the Songshan line. (4) Facility Identification--enables passengers to easily recognize transportation service facilities and safety facilities within each station. Signage is utilized to explain the purpose of each facility and space, assisting passengers in recognizing or understanding the services provided. Directional Signs Signage provides passengers with information for navigation and guides them to smoothly reach their destinations. In response to architectural design and circulation planning, the signage types include lightbox signs, freestanding signs, and adhesive signs. Directional lightbox signs are required to be installed at key decision points in paths of circulation to guide passengers in entering and exiting stations, making transfers, and accessing major pathways and related facilities for accessibility. Directional lightbox signs provide guidance on major pathways and for important facilities. Guidance for accessible waiting in the direction of travel. 3. Locational Signage Signage is utilized to display the relative relationship between the passenger's current location and destination, providing detailed supplementary information that can be viewed at close range. Depending on the content and nature of the informational graphics, signage is set up in conjunction with circulation paths for entering and exiting stations, including the following: (1) Route Map Maps display the current Taipei MRT operational network and primarily provide information about the locations of various stations and routes, as well as transfer information between routes. (2) Station Guidance Map These maps provide information on the layout of each level of the station in which the passenger is located along with the locations of major facilities and exits. (3) Location Map, Transfer Information A map is presented which centers on the current station, covering a 1.6-kilometer radius around the station and showing streets, major buildings, and transfer facilities within the area. This enables passengers to confirm the station's surrounding geography and their destination. Transfer information is provided below the map. (4) Exit Information Directional identification is provided for each exit, and nearby landmarks and buildings are listed for each exit in textual form. Exit information, location map / transfer information, route map, station guidance map (5) Single Line Map Based on different types of platforms, maps are installed on the trackside walls near escalators or stairs, on the free-standing information panels on the platforms, or in the overhead panels above the platform screen doors. Stations which have been passed should be displayed in lighter colors in order to highlight the direction of travel. Single line map above a platform screen door (6) Fare Route Map These maps are installed above Automatic Ticket Issuing Machines (ATIM) to provide fare information for ticket purchases. Fare route map (7) Elevator Location Map These maps are installed on the ground level in front of entrances where there is no elevator to provide information about the location of the elevator entrance at the station. Informational Signs These signs provide explanations of station-related services and boarding announcements, such as station service hours and completion plaques. Completion plaque Regulatory Signs These signs are primarily used to remind, prohibit, or warn passengers about certain behaviors and include warning signs, prohibition signs, emergency facility signs, and fire facility signs, as well as evacuation and emergency escape signs. Examples include no smoking or eating signs within the station, escalator safety signs, emergency help buttons, etc. Some warning signs also include information regarding penalties. No smoking and No eating or drinking signs Sign for firefighting facilities

(2) Line Identification-- enables passengers to easily recognize and differentiate between the different lines of the MRT system. Line identification includes the line color, the line name, and the line code. To simplify the indication of each line and enhance passengers' recognition, a specific color has been designated to identify each line. These colors can be incorporated into station building decorations to emphasize color schemes, and they are reflected in the network map and related signage. The first letter of the line color in English is incorporated into the line code.
