The signage system in Taipei MRT provides assistance, disseminates MRT information, connects facilities and helps manage the system. The main aim of signage designed by DORTS is to provide a basic service to passengers on the network and ensure a safe and smooth journey from passengers’ station of origin to their destination.</p><p><br></p><p>Taipei MRT is the first transportation network of its kind in Taiwan. In the early stages of the system design planning, international signage system designs were referenced and adjusted to suit the spatial layout and architectural characteristics of the Taipei MRT system. In 1987, a "Signage and Graphics Manual" was developed as a foundational guide for Taipei MRT projects, ensuring consistency throughout the system. The manual was revised into a Chinese version in 1996, underwent a major revision in 2002, and has been subsequently updated to align with regulatory requirements, operational feedback, and recommendations from the signage project team. The third edition of the "Signage System Design Guidelines" in Chinese was issued in August 2023.</p><p><br></p><p>On the initial routes, DORTS designed the signage system and applied it to each line as one construction contract for the implementation of construction drawing review and construction consulting tasks. Furthermore, from Kunyang Station on the Nangang line, Fuzhong Station and Banqiao Station on the Banqiao line, and the Tucheng line to future routes, signage design work and construction services have been included within the scope of each civil engineering detailed design contract. Detailed design contractors have carried out station signage design in accordance with the signage design guidelines promulgated by DORTS, and construction has been integrated into the civil engineering contracts. A systematic color plan can assist passengers in reacting more intuitively and rapidly when interpreting visual information. For example, using colors to distinguish information categories, such as red for prohibitions and emergencies, can assist passengers in quickly identifying the type of information. For the color scheme of Taipei MRT signage design, fixed color schemes and color codes have been selected, and their Pantone, RGB, and CMYK codes have been specified on the basis of the different information conveyed. This ensures that different design items maintain a unified color reference throughout various production processes, materials, and messages to achieve color consistency.</p><p> </p><p style="color: rgb(214, 28, 82); font-size: 120%; font-weight: bold;">TEXT:</p><p>In addition to taking high recognizability and readability into consideration, to provide diverse user-friendly services in response to global trends, the font was changed to "Wen Ding UD Jingxi Black." The characteristics of this font meet the reading requirements of various users and streamline layout space. Additionally, all textual descriptions in the Taipei MRT signage system are bilingual in Chinese and English, with specified ratios for Chinese and English; furthermore, the romanization of Chinese is based on Hanyu Pinyin.</p><p> </p><p style="color: rgb(214, 28, 82); font-size: 120%; font-weight: bold;">Graphics:</p><p>The design of various symbols and patterns should align with the principles of consistency, continuity, simplicity, and harmony. The goal is to be simple, easy to understand, and internationally recognizable in order to facilitate visual comprehension and achieve effective communication. Depending on the content and nature of the informational graphics, signage is set up in conjunction with circulation paths for entering and exiting stations, including the following:</p><p>(1) Route Map</p><p style=" margin-left:3ex;">Maps display the current Taipei MRT operational network and primarily provide information about the locations of various stations and routes, as well as transfer information between routes.</p> <p>(2) Station Guidance Map</p><p style=" margin-left:3ex;">These maps provide information on the layout of each level of the station in which the passenger is located along with the locations of major facilities and exits.</p> <p>(3) Location Map, Transfer Information</p><p style=" margin-left:3ex;">A map is presented which centers on the current station, covering a 1.6-kilometer radius around the station and showing streets, major buildings, and transfer facilities within the area. This enables passengers to confirm the station's surrounding geography and their destination.
