"Content": "Signage design is a type of visual design, which employs the composition of text, graphics and colors to provide identification, guidance, illustration, and warning functionality. The signage system in Taipei MRT provides assistance, disseminates MRT information, connects facilities and helps manage the system. The main aim of signage designed by DORTS is to provide a basic service to passengers on the network and ensure a safe and smooth journey from passengers’ station of origin to their destination.Taipei MRT is the first transportation network of its kind in Taiwan. In the early stages of the system design planning, international signage system designs were referenced and adjusted to suit the spatial layout and architectural characteristics of the Taipei MRT system. In 1987, a "Signage and Graphics Manual" was developed as a foundational guide for Taipei MRT projects, ensuring consistency throughout the system. The manual was revised into a Chinese version in 1996, underwent a major revision in 2002, and has been subsequently updated to align with regulatory requirements, operational feedback, and recommendations from the signage project team. The third edition of the "Signage System Design Guidelines" in Chinese was issued in August 2023.On the initial routes, DORTS designed the signage system and applied it to each line as one construction contract for the implementation of construction drawing review and construction consulting tasks. Furthermore, from Kunyang Station on the Nangang line, Fuzhong Station and Banqiao Station on the Banqiao line, and the Tucheng line to future routes, signage design work and construction services have been included within the scope of each civil engineering detailed design contract. Detailed design contractors have carried out station signage design in accordance with the signage design guidelines promulgated by DORTS, and construction has been integrated into the civil engineering contracts. During the construction phase, the main contractor has coordinated with subcontractors in order to streamline construction interfaces. ",

"title": " Graphic Standard",
"Content": "The design of colors, text, and graphics should fulfill the basic requirements of being visible, comprehensive, attentive, and readable in order to constitute effective visual design. Colors:Complex information can be simplified through the proper use of color. A systematic color plan can assist passengers in reacting more intuitively and rapidly when interpreting visual information. For example, using colors to distinguish information categories, such as red for prohibitions and emergencies, can assist passengers in quickly identifying the type of information. For the color scheme of Taipei MRT signage design, fixed color schemes and color codes have been selected, and their Pantone, RGB, and CMYK codes have been specified on the basis of the different information conveyed. This ensures that different design items maintain a unified color reference throughout various production processes, materials, and messages to achieve color consistency. TEXT:In addition to taking high recognizability and readability into consideration, to provide diverse user-friendly services in response to global trends, the font was changed to "Wen Ding UD Jingxi Black." The characteristics of this font meet the reading requirements of various users and streamline layout space. Additionally, all textual descriptions in the Taipei MRT signage system are bilingual in Chinese and English, with specified ratios for Chinese and English; furthermore, the romanization of Chinese is based on Hanyu Pinyin. Graphics:The design of various symbols and patterns should align with the principles of consistency, continuity, simplicity, and harmony. The goal is to be simple, easy to understand, and internationally recognizable in order to facilitate visual comprehension and achieve effective communication. The system makes use of internationally recognized icons as the design foundation, while also incorporating distinctive features of Taipei MRT in accordance with relevant regulations in Taiwan. ",

"title": "Taipei MRT Signage System Design Elements and Content",
"Content": "1. Identification of Systems, Lines, Stations, and Facilities(1) System Identification-- enables passengers to easily recognize and differentiate the Taipei MRT system from other transportation facilities. The Taipei MRT logo is utilized in Taipei MRT identification signage and primarily functions as a means of identifying the Taipei Metro system. This logo is mainly placed near entrances/exits and positioned in clearly visible locations along major streets to align with the spatial characteristics of the entrance areas.Suitable for station entrances near major roads and installed in clearly visible locations close to curbs.This type of signage was introduced beginning with the Neihu section of the Wenhu line for use in areas where station entrances are not clearly visible from the main roads or in expansive areas which are distant from curbs, such as plazas. (2) Line Identification-- enables passengers to easily recognize and differentiate between the different lines of the MRT system. Line identification includes the line color, the line name, and the line code. To simplify the indication of each line and enhance passengers' recognition, a specific color has been designated to identify each line. These colors can be incorporated into station building decorations to emphasize color schemes, and they are reflected in the network map and related signage. The first letter of the line color in English is incorporated into the line code. The line color is utilized as the primary color for building decorations. (3) Station Identification-- enables passengers to easily recognize and differentiate the individual stations in the MRT system. In addition to the unique architectural style of each station, station names and station codes facilitate identification of stations. This signage is present at all station entrances, the transition areas with non-MRT facilities, and on the platform level to assist passengers in identifying their respective stations when entering buildings and when trains arrive. The overall network has been established since the opening of the Songshan Line, and the introduction of station codes has enabled international travelers who may not be familiar with Chinese or English to rapidly identify stations.Station names on the platform levelfacilitate identification of stations when trains arrive.Station numbering was introducedthroughout the network beginning withthe opening of the Songshan line. (4) Facility Identification--enables passengers to easily recognize transportation service facilities and safety facilities within each station. Signage is utilized to explain the purpose of each facility and space, assisting passengers in recognizing or understanding the services provided.Identification of service facilitiesIdentification of service facilities 2. Directional SignsSignage provides passengers with information for navigation and guides them to smoothly reach their destinations. In response to architectural design and circulation planning, the signage types include lightbox signs, freestanding signs, and adhesive signs. Directional lightbox signs are required to be installed at key decision points in paths of circulation to guide passengers in entering and exiting stations, making transfers, and accessing major pathways and related facilities for accessibility.Directional lightbox signs provideguidance on major pathways and forimportant facilities.Guidance for accessible waiting inthe direction of travel. 3. Locational SignageSignage is utilized to display the relative relationship between the passenger's current location and destination, providing detailed supplementary information that can be viewed at close range. Depending on the content and nature of the informational graphics, signage is set up in conjunction with circulation paths for entering and exiting stations, including the following:(1) Route MapMaps display the current Taipei MRT operational network and primarily provide information about the locations of various stations and routes, as well as transfer information between routes. (2) Station Guidance MapThese maps provide information on the layout of each level of the station in which the passenger is located along with the locations of major facilities and exits. (3) Location Map, Transfer InformationA map is presented which centers on the current station, covering a 1.6-kilometer radius around the station and showing streets, major buildings, and transfer facilities within the area. This enables passengers to confirm the station's surrounding geography and their destination. Transfer information is provided below the map. (4) Exit InformationDirectional identification is provided for each exit, and nearby landmarks and buildings are listed for each exit in textual form. Exit information, location map / transfer information, route map,station guidance map (5) Single Line MapBased on different types of platforms, maps are installed on the trackside walls near escalators or stairs, on the free-standing information panels on the platforms, or in the overhead panels above the platform screen doors. Stations which have been passed should be displayed in lighter colors in order to highlight the direction of travel. Single line map above a platform screen door (6) Fare Route MapThese maps are installed above Automatic Ticket Issuing Machines (ATIM) to provide fare information for ticket purchases. Fare route map (7) Elevator Location MapThese maps are installed on the ground level in front of entrances where there is no elevator to provide information about the location of the elevator entrance at the station. Informational SignsThese signs provide explanations of station-related services and boarding announcements, such as station service hours and completion plaques.Completion plaque Regulatory SignsThese signs are primarily used to remind, prohibit, or warn passengers about certain behaviors and include warning signs, prohibition signs, emergency facility signs, and fire facility signs, as well as evacuation and emergency escape signs. Examples include no smoking or eating signs within the station, escalator safety signs, emergency help buttons, etc. Some warning signs also include information regarding penalties.No smoking and No eating ordrinking signsSign for firefighting facilities",
