Basic Signage Layout of Taipei MRT

Ground Level:

Roads surrounding stations and not under the jurisdiction of the MRT are installed MRT station LOGO according to "Regulations for the Installation of Traffic Signs, Marking and Signals on Roads" promulgated by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications to indicate station locations. Entrances/Exits of stations are mainly conveyed using signs with the Taipei MRT logos. Signs indicating stations' names are installed above all station entrances/exits as well as the service timetables indicating exit numbers and train information. Entrances with elevators are equipped with signs to indicate access into the stations at the adjacent ramps and street corners. Entrances without elevators are installed elevator location maps to indicate the locations of elevators on the ground level of the station.

Concourse Level:

Illuminated sign boxes and all kinds of information maps are installed at the entrances/exits circulation and turning points at each stations to provide passengers information on journeys and departures.

Platform Level

Platform edge lighting / smoke-barriers / platform numbers and train direction indicated above the platform screen doors/ single route map on trackside walls near the landing of escalators or above the platform screen doors provide passengers all train information on each platform. The yellow warning lines at platform edges, waiting symbols, the descriptive sign and floor painting of the waiting zone for female passengers at night provide information for passengers while waiting for trains. Information maps installed on each platform provide passengers with information about riding on trains and exiting stations. The platform edge lighting, station names indicated on trackside walls and columns enable passengers to identify arrival stations. For general stations with simple circulation, because each set of stair/ escalator is directed towards each exit with light box/information maps while arriving at the concourse level, only "exit" is indicated at the landing of each stair/escalator on the platform level without distinguishing each exit number and name in order to evacuate crowds as quickly as possible from the platforms.

In addition to each floor in stations, the basic planning and design for signage in trains and obstacle-free access are as follows:

1. Trains: System route maps aside and above the doors provide riding routes and transfer information. In addition there are also warning signs, such as no smoking, no food or drink, mind the platform gap, please do not lean on the doors as well as descriptive signs about facilities such as priority seating, fire extinguishers, and emergency intercoms. The sound system inside trains provides broadcast services about arrival station names. LED displays are also set up inside trains.

2. The service targets of obstacle-free access include wheelchair users, baby strollers, and the physically-impaired. Free-standing guidance signs, lit box signs, and information maps on station interiors and exteriors guide obstacle-free access for entering and exiting stations. Furthermore, sound broadcasts inside elevators and trains provide visually-impaired passengers with services for exiting stations and arriving in stations.
